A Narraweena home was damaged but saved from more serious destruction on Thursday, 18 June, after a gas meter caught fire when a pipe was ruptured during work at the property. Fire and Rescue NSW crews were called to Parr Parade shortly after 9am and spent nearly two hours containing the blaze before handing the site back to the owners.

When they arrived, they were told tradespeople working at the residential property had ruptured a pipe and a fire had ignited, engulfing the gas meter and preventing the gas supply from being shut off. Crews wearing breathing apparatus ran out hose lines, but they were unable to extinguish the fire while gas continued feeding the flames through the damaged supply line. Instead, firefighters established protection lines around the house while waiting for Jemena to attend and isolate the gas. By that stage, the fire had already begun spreading into the wall and roof of the home.
