A man has died after a spearfishing trip off North Head turned into a major rescue on Tuesday afternoon, with emergency crews called to the eastern side of the headland near Shelly Beach. The incident unfolded just before 3pm on 16 June, when cries for help were heard from the water between Blue Fish Point and Shelly Beach.
A man has died after a spearfishing trip off North Head turned into a major rescue on Tuesday afternoon, with emergency crews called to the eastern side of the headland near Shelly Beach. The incident unfolded just before 3pm on 16 June, when cries for help were heard from the water between Blue Fish Point and Shelly Beach. Emergency services were told two people were in the water. Police say it is understood a man in his 40s had been spearfishing with a 20-year-old man when they were caught in a rip and the older man lost consciousness. The younger man raised the alarm from the water, and bystanders on the headland who heard the calls for help contacted Triple Zero. A large response followed, involving NSW Police Marine Area Command, officers from Northern Beaches Police Area Command, NSW Ambulance, Fire and Rescue NSW Manly Station, the Toll NSW Ambulance Rescue Helicopter, the Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter and Northern Beaches Council lifeguards. Lifeguards from Manly Beach made their way towards Blue Fish Point on a jet ski and located both men in distress. They brought the pair back towards Shelly Beach, but found the older man was unresponsive and not breathing....
