In response to a concerning increase in shark activity and tragic incidents along the New South Wales coastline, Shark Bite Trauma Kits are being rolled out to over 120 Surf Life Saving Clubs, including key locations on the Northern Beaches. The initiative aims to empower the public to provide immediate, life-saving first aid in the critical moments following a shark attack. The new kits, which include wound wraps and tourniquets, are strategically placed on the exteriors of surf clubhouses. This ensures they are accessible 24/7, particularly during dawn and dusk when shark activity is highest and volunteer lifesavers or professional lifeguards may not be on duty. The deployment of these kits was officially announced at Dee Why Surf Life Saving Club, a poignant location following the fatal shark attack on local surfer Mercury Psillakis last year. Surf Life Saving NSW CEO Steve Pearce highlighted the necessity of the kits, noting that the Northern Beaches have experienced an unprecedented number of shark sightings and beach closures over the past summer.
