Northern Beaches Council is seeking community feedback on a proposed Statement of Recognition and Commitment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, aimed at setting out how council will engage with local people and stakeholders connected to the Northern Beaches. Mayor Sue Heins said council wants to better connect with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as part of its ongoing collaboration and consultation. “According to the 2021 Census, more than 1700 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people call the Northern Beaches home,” Mayor Heins said. She said the proposed statement is intended to recognise, celebrate and promote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage and culture on the Northern Beaches. Council said the draft includes elements of its Acknowledgement of Country, a former Statement of Reconciliation and the strategic goals of the Aboriginal Heritage Office. The draft Statement of Recognition and Commitment will open for comment on 23 March 2026 on council’s Your Say web page, where residents can provide feedback.
