Residents have been warned to avoid contact with Greendale Creek and Curl Curl Lagoon after untreated sewage heavily contaminated the waterway. Sydney Water is carrying out remediation work and assessing water quality before the affected area can be considered safe. Sydney Water confirmed on 8 September that crews traced the overflow to a blocked sewer in Powells Road, Brookvale. The blockage was cleared and the flow of sewage stopped on 6 September. Crews are now cleaning the affected area, aerating the creek and conducting water-quality tests. Ongoing inspections are also being used to assess the extent of the contamination and the effectiveness of the remediation work. People have been advised not to swim or fish in the area while that assessment continues. Dog owners should also keep their pets away from the creek and lagoon to prevent contact with contaminated water. The warning is particularly relevant for anyone who regularly uses the lagoon surrounds for recreation. Although the sewage is no longer entering the waterway, the end of the overflow does not mean contamination has cleared or that the area is safe to enter.
