New traffic lights in Mona Vale Road West design raise congestion concerns

A redesigned section of the long-awaited Mona Vale Road West upgrade could slow westbound traffic between Kimbriki Road and McCarrs Creek Road, despite plans to duplicate the route. The design released by federal Infrastructure and Transport Minister Catherine King and NSW Roads Minister Jenny Aitchison in August 2026 shows westbound vehicles being stopped at a new signalised intersection near the crest of the Terrey Hills climb.

The design released by federal Infrastructure and Transport Minister Catherine King and NSW Roads Minister Jenny Aitchison in August 2026 shows westbound vehicles being stopped at a new signalised intersection near the crest of the Terrey Hills climb. Under the existing arrangement, westbound traffic on Mona Vale Road continues through the McCarrs Creek Road intersection while joining vehicles merge through a slip lane. The updated design introduces traffic lights where through traffic currently has priority. The intersection was not included in the project's previous scope and is intended to improve access at Terrey Hills. The plans also show a slip lane of about 50 metres for westbound trucks entering Mona Vale Road from the Kimbriki Resource Recovery Centre. Earlier designs referred to a truck climbing lane. Large vehicles leaving Kimbriki would therefore enter the left lane of the planned dual carriageway while climbing the steep grade, with faster vehicles expected to use the right lane to pass....
