A new vertical garden has been installed in Market Lane near Manly Library, bringing more greenery to a busy urban space used by thousands of locals and visitors each day. The living wall is expected to become more noticeable as its plants establish over the coming weeks.

A new vertical garden has been installed in Market Lane near Manly Library, bringing more greenery to a busy urban space used by thousands of locals and visitors each day. The living wall is expected to become more noticeable as its plants establish over the coming weeks. Measuring three metres by two metres, the structure contains 15 different plant varieties intended to add colour and biodiversity to the laneway. It was installed by The Greenwall Company and is made from 95 per cent recycled materials. The project is designed to make the heavily built-up section of central Manly a more welcoming place to walk through and spend time. Northern Beaches Council says access to greenery can help reduce stress, improve mood and make public spaces more enjoyable. The plants may also provide a small cooling benefit by releasing moisture into the surrounding air. This is intended to help counter the urban heat island effect, in which densely developed areas such as central Manly can become hotter than their surroundings.
