Twenty-one detained in Northern Beaches retail theft crackdown

Police detained or arrested 21 people during a two-day crackdown on retail theft across major Northern Beaches shopping centres, including a man allegedly carrying a box cutter and meat cleaver at Warringah Mall. The operation on Wednesday 29 and Thursday 30 July 2026 resulted in four people being charged and 16 receiving criminal infringement notices. The Northern Beaches Proactive Crime Team conducted the operation, which involved 17 adults and four juveniles. Police said the action was aimed at shoplifting across the area's main retail centres, with banning notices also issued in some cases to prevent alleged offenders from returning to particular stores. At Warringah Mall about 12.20pm on 29 July, police allege a 35-year-old man concealed batteries in his pockets at Woolworths. After leaving the store, he was stopped by a loss prevention officer and handed over the batteries, a protein bar and cosmetics. Police allegedly found a box cutter tucked into the waistband of his pants and a large meat cleaver in his backpack.
