Young Northern Beaches filmmakers challenged to create a short film in four days

Young filmmakers will have four days to write, shoot and complete a short film for the 2026 Beaches Young Filmmakers Comp, which is open to emerging creators who live, work or study on the Northern Beaches. Entrants can compete alone or in teams and must produce a film of no more than seven minutes.
Young filmmakers will have four days to write, shoot and complete a short film for the 2026 Beaches Young Filmmakers Comp, which is open to emerging creators who live, work or study on the Northern Beaches. Entrants can compete alone or in teams and must produce a film of no more than seven minutes. The creative challenge begins at 4pm on Wednesday 12 August, when Northern Beaches Council will reveal a mystery item, keyword and phrase on its website. Each film must incorporate those secret elements and be submitted by 9pm on Sunday 16 August. Teams can have between one and 10 members, with all entrants required to be aged from 12 to 24. Solo filmmakers must live, work or study in the Northern Beaches. For teams, at least two members or 50 per cent of the group must meet that local connection requirement. The tight production window means entrants will need to move quickly from developing an idea to filming and editing it. The competition is open to actors, directors, writers and storytellers as well as experienced and first-time filmmakers, allowing participants to divide production roles among friends or take on the full project themselves.
