For local residents who rely on the permits for free parking, the change matters immediately because new applications now go through an online portal and existing sticker holders have until the end of August to switch over. The new system, called vPermit, opened this week on 1 July. Council said the digital permits will be linked to vehicle registration details and checked electronically, rather than through a sticker displayed on the car. Existing physical permits are still valid until 31 August, giving current users a two-month transition period. Council says about 208,000 existing permits will need to be moved across during that period. Residents will use the new portal to apply for, manage and renew permits, and council says eligible applications will be approved immediately once details are verified.
