Northern Beaches residents will be able to dispose of unwanted household chemicals for free at Mona Vale this weekend under a joint collection run by the NSW Environment Protection Authority and Northern Beaches Council. The clean-out matters because it gives locals a safe alternative to leaving hazardous products in cupboards, sheds and garages, where they can build up over time. The collection is aimed at household chemicals stored across the home, not just in obvious places such as the laundry or garage. The EPA says the clean-out covers unwanted chemicals kept in bedrooms, living areas, kitchens, bathrooms, home offices, attics, sheds, balconies, patios, around pools, under the house and in the garden. For most residents, the limit is up to 20 kilograms or 20 litres per waste type. There is one larger allowance for trade painters, who can dispose of up to 100 litres of paint as long as it is in 20-litre containers. The collection is set up as a drive-through service. People attending are asked to remain in their vehicle at all times and follow directions from traffic controllers, with contractors then collecting the items from the vehicle when it is their turn.
