Northern Beaches underwater photography competition to open in July with $3,500 prize pool

Northern Beaches Council’s Underwater Photography Competition will return next month, with local photographers and videographers invited to submit images and short reels from across the area’s five aquatic reserves. Entries open on Thursday 23 July and close on Sunday 16 August 2026, giving residents several weeks to capture marine life, underwater landscapes and conservation stories from along the coast.

Northern Beaches Council’s Underwater Photography Competition will return next month, with local photographers and videographers invited to submit images and short reels from across the area’s five aquatic reserves. Entries open on Thursday 23 July and close on Sunday 16 August 2026, giving residents several weeks to capture marine life, underwater landscapes and conservation stories from along the coast. The competition is now in its sixth year and carries a total prize pool of $3,500. The overall winner will receive the Valerie Taylor Underwater Photography Award for Excellence, the event’s top honour, while younger entrants will also compete for the Underwater Youth Photographer of the Year 2026 title. This year’s theme is Where Protection Brings Life, which council says aligns with World Ocean Day 2026 and its focus on strong marine protected areas. That gives the competition a clear environmental angle as well as an artistic one, with entries expected to highlight the biodiversity found in the Northern Beaches reserves.
