A man has died after being pulled from the water off Shelly Beach at Manly on Tuesday 16 June, in an incident that drew a major emergency response to one of the Northern Beaches' busiest coastal areas.
A man has died after being pulled from the water off Shelly Beach at Manly on Tuesday 16 June, in an incident that drew a major emergency response to one of the Northern Beaches' busiest coastal areas. Emergency services were called to Shelly Beach about 2.50pm after reports that two swimmers had been pulled from the water and one was unconscious. The pair were brought back to shore after getting into trouble in the water near North Head. Police say the man who later died had been spearfishing with another man when they were caught in a rip. He has not been formally identified, but is understood to have been a US national in his 40s. The two men were rescued by jetski and taken to shore, where NSW Ambulance paramedics began treatment. Paramedics performed CPR and were able to revive the man before he was transported to hospital in a critical condition. He later died in hospital. The second swimmer, a 20-year-old man, was not injured. The death will now be subject to the usual coronial process. A report is being prepared for the Coroner.
